Breaching the Ziggurat: Glory, Gold, and High-Caliber Peril

January 7, 2025

The Forbidden Ziggurat, The Frontier of No Return – The ancient ziggurat loomed like a silent sentinel as the crew prepared for their descent into the unknown. Acting on orders from Mad Matt - the self-appointed commander of this expedition - the group assumed tactical positions, with the "leader" stationed at a “tactically advantageous” position: safely in the rear to ensure his own liberty remained uncompromised. The first order of business was seeking intelligence from Auralis, the ancient spirit imprisoned within the golden idol. The spirit’s warnings of unnatural heat and concealed revolving walls painted a picture of high-stakes danger. However, Auralis also mentioned pools of healing water scattered throughout the temple, offering a glimmer of hope for the survival of our brave pioneers.

An Unexpected New Recruit
Before venturing down either of the two visible staircases, the group encountered a new face: a halfling cleric hunched over a cryptic note. Introducing himself as Eldrian, the halfling confessed to some memory loss but showed a keen interest in joining the expedition's cause. The note he clutched, left by a previous adventurer, referenced Auralis, the golden idol, and the bountiful treasures that might still lie unclaimed in the ziggurat. Despite his amnesia, Eldrian’s eager demeanor and clerical support made him a welcome addition to the crew. In the spirit of rugged individualism and property rights, Mad Matt struck a deal with Auralis: if the crew could liberate the spirit from her golden prison, they would be granted full ownership of the idol. With that contract signed, they descended into the depths.

Traps, Treasures, and Tactical Firepower
The left-hand staircase led the party into a dead-end room with no visible exit. Auralis’ earlier intel about revolving walls proved invaluable as the group discovered two concealed passages. Behind one wall sat a small dragon statue, guarded by a nasty spike trap. Utilizing their specialized magical munitions, Tiyana and Deva worked together to bypass the danger; Deva deployed her Thorn Whip to trigger the trap while Tiyana used her Mage Hand to snatch the idol with precision.
The next room branched into two staircases, and Mad Matt, ever the delegator of responsibilities, assigned roles. He ordered Marina and Eldrian to scout the left path while Tiyana and Deva took the right. Predictably, Matt himself stayed behind, claiming he was "guarding the stairs" but clearly using the opportunity to enjoy some much-needed downtime.

Marina and Eldrian’s Discovery
Marina and Eldrian’s chosen path led them into a room containing a skeleton lying amidst rubble. Overcome by the prospect of finding gold, Marina and Eldrian rummaged through the bones, only to be disappointed by the lack of loot. Eldrian, appalled by his sudden outburst of greed, took a moment to respectfully rearrange the remains and recite a prayer for the departed.
The adjacent chamber contained a glowing red circle etched into the floor, pulsating with raw magical energy. Eldrian, sensing a threat to their safety, urged caution, but Marina's bold, frontier spirit got the better of her. She stepped tentatively into the room, only to feel a sharp, stinging sensation that forced an immediate retreat. Agreeing to regroup and re-evaluate, they returned to the central staircase to await the rest of the squad.

Deva and Tiyana’s Firefight
Meanwhile, Tiyana and Deva followed their staircase to a chamber housing a pool of green water. Auralis had warned them that the liquid was tainted and certainly not part of the temple's legendary healing supplies. Undeterred, Deva leaned closer to inspect her reflection, only to watch in horror as it morphed into a viscous slime that surged out of the pool to attack. The battle was harrowing. Deva summoned her Flame Blade to fend off the creature, but the viscous slime was resistant to fire - a real setback for their firepower. Tiyana’s quick thinking and Magic Missiles provided some much-needed suppression, but the creature’s relentless onslaught forced Deva to call for reinforcements. Hearing the word "treasure," Mad Matt abandoned his post and sprinted down the stairs like a man on a mission, only to be met with the grotesque sight of the slime engulfing Deva's armor. Invoking the power of Nalzagoth, Matt deployed a heavy-duty Create or Destroy Water, obliterating a significant portion of the slime. With the creature weakened, Deva delivered the final blow, vaporizing the remaining mass with her Flame Blade. Though victorious, the two adventurers were shaken. Peering through a nearby door, they saw an ominous hallway lined with traps and decided to retreat to the central room to regroup with Marina and Eldrian. However, Deva first decided to cash in a favor she had secured from Mad Matt long ago. Even though the details of the agreement had been lost to time, Matt complied and pushed forward. He pressed onward, discovering a hallway lined with arrow chutes. Mad Matt, emboldently claiming the path was clear, skipped through the first two sets of chutes unscathed. His overconfidence proved costly, as the third set of chutes unleashed a barrage of arrows, impaling his hands and leaving him screaming in pain. Chastened by the sudden loss of his mobility, he ducked under the remaining chutes, discovering a large hallway adorned with a mural of a two-headed snake and four doors leading to further mysteries.

Regrouping with the Crew
Mad Matt decided it was time to reunite with the rest of the unit, and soon Tiyana, Deva, Eldrian, and Marina stood with him in the hallway. Behind the first door, the group encountered roots imbued with unnatural life. These writhing tendrils ensnared Marina and Deva, forcing the party into a desperate struggle for survival. Marina managed to free herself and hacked away at a pulsating tree node embedded in the wall. Destroying the node rendered the roots lifeless, clearing the path forward for the expedition.
The next door revealed a familiar sight: a glowing red circle on the floor, radiating magical energy. Mad Matt speculated that the circle was the work of a warlock attempting to summon something sinister. Before the group could formulate a tactical plan, Deva, impatient with all the theorizing, stepped into the circle, triggering the appearance of two flaming birds.

The Battle Against the Flaming Birds
The fiery creatures wasted no time unleashing their wrath, scorching the party with bursts of flame. Tiyana, learning from her earlier mistake with the slime, refrained from using fire-based magic, opting instead for high-precision Magic Missiles. Marina charged forward with her greataxe, while Eldrian swung his mace with fervor but struggled to land a solid hit.
Mad Matt’s icy tentacles turned the tide of the battle, exploiting the birds’ vulnerability to cold. The first bird was drenched by a rain cloud conjured by Matt, allowing Marina to finish it off with a decisive strike. The second bird, cornered and desperate, lashed out, injuring Tiyana and Mad Matt. Eldrian rushed to provide medical aid to the wounded leader, while Deva unveiled her secret weapon: the Potion of the Small Puddle. Once mocked for her faith in this specialized equipment, Deva’s gamble paid off spectacularly as the liquid extinguished the flames of the remaining bird, reducing it to lifeless bones.

A Glimpse of Greater Challenges
With the fiery threat neutralized, the group turned their attention to the glowing circle. Could it serve as the key to securing the liberty of Auralis? The spirit dismissed the idea, explaining that the circle’s power was insufficient for such a grand undertaking. She directed the party to the ziggurat’s fifth floor, where a suitable location might be found.
Exhausted and battered, the adventurers decided to rest within the circle’s protective glow. As they prepared to delve deeper into the heart of the frontier, the weight of their discoveries and the challenges ahead loomed large. The ziggurat’s secrets were proving as perilous as they were enticing, and the party’s journey toward glory was far from over.
