Tempestuous Tides and Harpy Showdowns: A Wild Night of Liberty in Inderøy

September 24, 2024

Inderøy – The expedition forged ahead as our party sailed into Inderøy, standing tall against a ferocious storm that attempted to infringe upon their sovereignty. Miraculously, their vessel remained unscathed, the only ship displaying such unyielding resilience in sight. Seeking refuge from the elements, they stormed into a nearby tavern, where they encountered two eccentric characters: Caleb and Giacomo, both enjoying a night of cold drinks. A brief, high-stakes skirmish ensued, but the two eventually agreed to join the cause - entirely on their own terms and free of charge.
It wasn’t long before the barkeep shared some heavy news: several ships had been taken out of commission by recent groundings, and Harpies were rumored to be the culprits behind this unchecked aggression. The town elder, Ølødelgødel Blødelsødelstrøm, was particularly riled up because a vital shipment from Helberskon - a key piece of their local commerce - had never arrived. The group, never ones to let an infringement on their interests go unchecked, ventured out into the stormy night to hunt down these pests and reclaim the lost cargo.

A Shipwreck and Shadows in the Sky
After a three-hour trek through the rugged terrain, they arrived at a desolate beach littered with towering stone pillars and the wreckage of a beached ship. Using their Waterbreathing Algae, a tactical advantage gifted by the Marid, they scouted the wreck. Inside, they found only casualties and an empty cargo hold. As they resurfaced, a massive shadow passed overhead - a clear sign that the Harpy population was encroaching on their territory.
Further along the coast, the group found the other half of the shipwreck, but once again, no survivors were found to tell the tale. Then, they saw it - a gigantic bird’s nest perched atop one of the stone pillars. Ready to confront these uninvited guests, they began their ascent, with Giacomo (in his trademark brand of reckless liberty) opting to be launched like a projectile by Ace, landing within the ruins of a lighthouse. The rest of the party climbed with grit and caution, until they were greeted by three menacing shadows: two smaller harpies and their leader, a monstrous matriarch.

The Battle with Big Momma Harpy
The skirmish erupted as Caleb, acting as the group’s premier sharpshooter, loosed a crossbow bolt with pinpoint accuracy into one of the smaller Harpies. Ace utilized the cover of darkness for a high-stakes sneak attack. Giacomo pondered transforming into various beasts but decided to stick to his human form to close the distance and face the enemy head-on. Then, disaster struck - the Matriarch attempted to manipulate their very wills with her bewitching song. Ace and Selah, caught in the melody's siren call, started walking toward the Harpy, completely oblivious to the danger to their personal autonomy. Selah, now wandering aimlessly, nearly tumbled off a cliff, but luckily had prepared for such an occasion by applying climbing claw ointment to her hands and feet - true pioneer preparation. She descended the rock wall into the water, unharmed. Mabel quickly intervened, slapping Ace to snap him back into a state of high alert, while linking their life forces with a tactical magical spell to share any incoming damage. Amidst the chaos, Mad Matt engaged the other small Harpy, while Giacomo and Mabel worked together to hold the line against the Matriarch’s powerful attacks. The Matriarch unleashed deadly feather blades, one of which wounded Mabel grievously, while Selah - snapping out of her trance mid-swim - intercepted one in the air and threw it back, striking the Matriarch. As the battle raged on, Ace unleashed a series of devastating strikes, neutralizing one of the smaller Harpies with his electrified rapier. Meanwhile, Selah climbed from the water onto the rocks, biding her time for the perfect ambush. Giacomo finally embraced his inner beast - transforming into a massive hippo to lead a heavy-duty charge against the Matriarch, though she retaliated fiercely with her razor-sharp claws. With Selah's swift strikes and Caleb’s continuous rain of crossbow bolts, it was Ace’s trusty Balestrina that delivered the final, decisive blow, sending the Harpy Matriarch plummeting into the waves below.

A Dark Twist
After the hard-won victory, the group searched the Harpy nest. Inside, they discovered a treasure trove of gold coins and a mysterious chest filled with five oddly-shaped keys. These keys, they remembered, were vital to an expedition rumored to lead to the Tower on Eye Island. Just as they prepared to claim their spoils and leave, the storm intensified. All sound suddenly faded, and a demonic voice boomed over the crashing waves with absolute authority:

HOW DARE YOU KILL MY SERVANT!

Five massive tentacles erupted from the sea, grappling the adventurers. The being demanded a reason not to crush them where they stood. The party scrambled for a way to negotiate their survival, but it was Mad Matt who offered the most daring solution - he volunteered to serve the Kraken in place of the fallen Matriarch. Impressed by Matt’s boldness, the being accepted - on one condition:

NEVER CALL ME KRAKEN AGAIN!
I AM NALZAGOTH THE STAR DEVOURER!

With that, the Great Nalzagoth released the others but pulled Mad Matt into the ocean. The storm died down, and the remaining party members frantically searched the waters for any sign of their lost comrade.

The Return of Mad Mad Matt
As they gathered on the shore, Caleb attempted to light a fire with the still soaking wet wood. Suddenly, a figure emerged from the water - Mad Matt, completely rebranded. His skin now glistened with an oily sheen, and his beard had morphed into writhing tentacles. With a display of newfound power, he extended one of his tentacles at Giacomo, who couldn’t help but comment on Matt’s new “fishy” aroma. With his transformation complete, Mad Matt officially reclaimed the title of Captain from Selah, who stood down without hesitation. The crew decided to delay their trek to Fort Murray and instead return to Inderøy to regroup. Armed with the mysterious keys, they would now join the adventuring squads preparing for a full-scale exploration of the Tower of Eye Island. The storm may have passed, but a new adventure, and the growing shadow of Nalzagoth, looms large over the frontier.
