Trouble at the Yufune Festival: Dancing Spirits and Sugar Statues Attack! | Jan Teschner

Forests around Yufune - After docking at Yufune Harbor, our intrepid adventurers set out for the famed university, but something felt off. Instead of heading into the city, almost everyone was walking in the opposite direction. Deva approached a passerby to ask what was going on and discovered that a special festival in a nearby forest was drawing the crowds. Held only once every five years, the festival was an event too tempting for the party to resist, so they decided to join in the festivities.

Shopping Spree at the Festival Stalls
The festival was alive with color and excitement, with stalls of all kinds lining the forest path leading to a grand temple. Among the food vendors, weapon dealers, and performers, the party found plenty to do. Ace tried his hand at selling his Electric Sapphire to an antiques dealer but couldn’t strike a good deal. Deva purchased a Silver Javelin, while Selah splurged on a variety of instruments - banjos, drums, and tambourines - for the crew. Mad Matt, ever unpredictable, was torn between buying a monkey or a parrot at the animal stall. In the end, he chose the monkey and outfitted it with a tiny vest and pouch, while Selah picked up a sphynx cat, choosing it over an adder that eyed Matt’s new monkey a little too hungrily. Ace fused his rapier with the Electric Sapphire at the blacksmith, imbuing it with shocking power.

Whispers of Bad Luck and Stirring Spirits
The fun of the festival was dampened when the party encountered a fortune teller, who warned them of foul play. Some of her good luck talismans had begun granting bad luck instead, and she suspected the spirits, upset with how commercial the festival had become, were responsible. A nearby sugar artist named Momo shared her concerns - her delicate sugar sculptures of dragons, cranes, and tigers had started moving on their own. The party realized the spirits were angered by the festival's loss of traditional reverence. Determined to calm the spirits, the party decided to hold a dance performance atop the temple grounds. They juggled, backflipped, and entertained a small crowd, but their efforts were interrupted by three bursts of blue energy shooting from the temple into the festival alley.

Sugar Statues Come to Life!
As Ace was collecting tips from the crowd, screams erupted from Momo’s stall. Her sugar creations - now fully animated - were terrorizing festival-goers! The party sprang into action. Mad Matt swiftly evacuated civilians into the river, knowing the sugar statues would dissolve on contact with water. Meanwhile, Ace, Mabel, Deva, and Selah fought the animated figures, breaking the sugar shells easily. But when the first statue shattered, a blue spirit emerged and continued the attack! The party soon realized that the sugar statues were mere vessels for the spirits. Things got worse when flying talismans, seemingly possessed, began attaching themselves to the combatants. Selah, struck by one, found herself cursed with bad luck, unable to land a single blow. Despite the odds, the party managed to destroy two of the spirits, leaving only one.

Capoeira to Save the Festival?
As the final spirit weakened, Selah had a stroke of inspiration. Speaking in Celestial and Demonic, she asked the spirit why it was attacking the festival. To her surprise, the spirit replied, revealing that the festival was originally meant to honor them, but had become too focused on profit. Even more surprisingly, the spirit explained that the dance the party performed wasn’t enough - only Capoeira, the dance of kicks and combat, would appease the spirits. The spirit expressed frustration over its two fallen friends, lamenting the week-long wait until their return. Selah thanked the spirit for its honesty and ended its suffering with a swift stab, sending it back to join its companions.

A Sweet Reward and a Lesson for the Future
Before leaving, the party informed the festival organizers about the need to restore Capoeira to the celebrations. Momo, grateful for the party’s intervention, offered them a sugar statue of a tiger as a token of thanks. With a sweet reward in hand and a festival saved, the party departed the forest and finally headed towards the university.
