Camp Sonoma, the Forbidden Frontier – Deva and Marina woke up in the rugged outpost of Camp Sonoma to find two shadows looming over them: Mad Matt, a true wildcard of a man, and Mikhail, a local independent entrepreneur. Mikhail delivered some grim news regarding a curse creeping out from the Temple on the Forbidden Island - a curse that was stripping the grit from adventurers and spreading a heavy, unnatural lethargy across the land.
Returning to their vessel, Deva and Marina found their crewmates - Selah, Tiyana, Mabel, and Ace - completely sidelined by the curse, slumped in a deep, unnatural slumber. A familiar, feathery face appeared near the ship: Dingo, the Traveling Bird Barbarian, had drifted into Camp Sonoma during his wanderings. Ready to uphold the spirit of adventure, Dingo rejoined the ranks without hesitation.

A Radical Act of Liberation
Mad Matt’s monkey familiar, Sir Spencer, made a drowsy attempt to climb onto Matt’s shoulder. Disgusted by what he saw as a lack of fortitude, Matt commanded his crew to fetch his longsword. When no one moved, Dingo stepped up and delivered it. What followed was nothing short of a brutal spectacle.
Before the stunned eyes of the party, Mad Matt executed Sir Spencer, ceremonially slicing the monkey in two. Blood sprayed across Dingo’s feathers, leaving Marina cowering behind Dingo’s wings in pure shock.
“I have liberated Sir Spencer from the weakness of the flesh!” Matt proclaimed, as dark blue flames consumed the remains. When the fire died down, Sir Spencer had been reborn - a skeletal undead familiar with glowing red eyes fixed firmly on his new reality.
Gear Up for the Forbidden Frontier
Seeking answers, the group consulted Mikhail, who explained that the curse was an invasive force originating from the island's temple. Having breached the island's borders, the curse was now encroaching on Camp Sonoma, threatening the very survival of the settlement.
Mikhail offered essential survival supplies, including high-octane emergency stimulant syringes priced at 100 gold apiece. Marina engaged in some fierce, hard-nosed negotiation, reminding Mikhail that if they failed, the whole town’s future was at stake. Driven by the stakes, Mikhail relented, selling the party both stimulants and a raft at half price - with Dingo footing the bill for the heavy lifting.
Before their departure, Mikhail gave them a heads-up: the island’s rivers were lawless, with treacherous currents and rapidly shifting water levels. Armed with this intel, the crew set sail into the unknown.
Navigating the Wild Waters
The journey through narrow gorges and surging rapids tested the party’s true grit. At one point, Dingo spotted a chest of loot along the riverbank. Inside was a pearl necklace and 150 gold coins. A dispute over property rights erupted, with Mad Matt demanding the entire haul as “payment for his employees.” The rest of the crew stood their ground, insisting on an even split of the spoils.
Nearby carvings resembling eyes caught Deva’s eye. Consulting Auralis, the golden idol clarified that such markings were entirely foreign to the iconography of the Golden Heart religion.
Guided by Auralis, the party pushed forward. Marina proved her indomitable strength, hauling the raft free when it became snagged and expertly navigating the treacherous currents - though she endured some grumbling from Mad Matt, who eventually took over the helm.
Disaster struck when the water levels dropped suddenly, slamming the raft onto a jagged rock. The impact sent Marina crashing into sharp rocks, her blood spilling into the current. Moments later, a swarm of piranhas emerged, drawn by the scent of the struggle.
Battle on the River
The piranhas struck with relentless fury, drawn to the scent of Marina’s blood. Dingo swooped in for a rescue, carrying her to a nearby rock, while Deva and Mad Matt held the line on the raft. Dingo returned, swinging his axe through the swarm - until the weapon slipped from his grip and sank into the depths. Caught in the chaos, he was snagged by one of Matt’s summoned tentacles and dragged underwater!
Dingo fought his way free, reclaimed his axe, and launched himself back onto the raft, sending Matt face-first into the piranha frenzy. Marina rejoined the fray, though her own axe was lost to the river in the heat of the skirmish.
By the time the last piranha was silenced, Deva demanded that Matt and Dingo settle their grievances. Dingo admitted he was a bit reactionary, but Mad Matt simply remarked, "the fishes need to eat too, but the bird won today." Marina just shook her head, muttering, “Boys will be boys.”
A Rugged Escape
The river narrowed into a high-speed rapid, hurtling toward a roaring waterfall. Dingo perched on a tree trunk across the bank, while Deva fashioned a vine net to secure the raft. Once again, Marina’s sheer power saved the day, hauling the raft and her companions onto the trunk and eventually onto solid ground.
Now safe from the rapids, they secured their raft and prepared to descend a 15-meter drop to the lower river level. Using rope and sheer determination, the group made their way down to the jungle floor.
Approaching the Ziggurat
Ahead lay their ultimate destination: the ziggurat temple, its massive silhouette framed by the fading light. The journey was far from over, but with Auralis guiding the way, the adventurers steeled themselves for the lawless challenges ahead.
