Forbidden Ziggurat, the Forbidden Island – The ancient ziggurat loomed quite ominously, much like a grey afternoon with no sign of clearing, as the party prepared for their descent into its depths. Acting on orders from Mad Matt, the group assumed combat-ready positions, with the self-proclaimed leader stationed at a “tactically advantageous” position – which was, if one is being honest, safely at the very back. The first step was seeking guidance from Auralis, the ancient spirit imprisoned within the golden idol. The spirit’s warnings of unnatural heat - which sounded dreadfully muggy - and concealed revolving walls painted a rather unpleasant picture of the dangers ahead. Auralis also mentioned pools of healing water scattered throughout the temple, offering a bit of hope amidst all the chaos.

Venturing into the Ziggurat: A Spot of Triumph, Some Shiny Bits, and Truly Dreadful Trials

An Unexpected Ally
Before venturing down either of the two visible staircases, the group encountered a curious figure: a halfling cleric hunched over a cryptic note. Introducing himself as Eldrian, the halfling confessed to a bit of a muddle with his memory but displayed a keen interest in the temple. The note he clutched, written by a previous adventurer, referenced Auralis, the golden idol, and treasures that might still lie hidden in the ziggurat. Despite his amnesia, Eldrian’s eager demeanor and clerical abilities made him a lovely addition to the crew. In light of the note’s revelations, Mad Matt struck a deal with Auralis. If the crew could free the spirit from the golden prison, they would be allowed to claim the idol. With that understanding, they descended into the ziggurat, much like waiting in a rather long queue for a decent cuppa.
Traps, Treasures, and Tactical Challenges
The left-hand staircase led the party into a dead-end room with no visible exit, which was quite a bother, really. Auralis’ earlier advice about revolving walls proved invaluable as the group discovered two concealed passages. Behind one wall was a small dragon statue, guarded by a bit of a nasty spike trap. Combining their magical expertise, Tiyana and Deva worked together to bypass the danger, with Deva activating the trap using her Thorn Whip while Tiyana used her Mage Hand to snatch the idol safely - very efficient, that.
The next room branched into two staircases, and Mad Matt, ever the delegator (and rather keen to avoid any actual work), assigned roles. He ordered Marina and Eldrian to explore the left path while Tiyana and Deva took the right. Predictably, Matt himself stayed behind, claiming he was "guarding the stairs" but clearly using the opportunity for a well-earned rest and perhaps a biscuit.
Marina and Eldrian’s Discovery
Marina and Eldrian’s chosen path led them into a room containing a skeleton lying amidst some rather messy rubble. Overcome by curiosity, Marina and Eldrian rummaged through the bones, hoping to find treasure, but were disappointed to find nothing of value. Eldrian, quite appalled by his own outburst of greed, took a moment to politely rearrange the remains and recite a prayer for the dead.
The adjacent chamber contained a glowing red circle etched into the floor, pulsating with magical energy. Eldrian, sensing it might be a bit risky, urged caution, but Marina's boldness got the better of her. She stepped tentatively into the room, only to feel a sharp, needling sensation that forced her to retreat. Agreeing to regroup, they returned to the central staircase to await the others.
Deva and Tiyana’s Encounter
Meanwhile, Tiyana and Deva followed their staircase to a chamber housing a pool of green water. Auralis had warned them that the liquid was tainted and certainly not among the temple's fabled healing waters - which was rather disappointing. Undeterred, Deva leaned closer to inspect her reflection, only to watch in horror as it morphed into a viscous slime that surged out of the pool to attack.
The battle was a bit of a kerflubble. Deva summoned her Flame Blade to fend off the creature, but the viscous slime was rather resistant to fire. Tiyana’s quick thinking and Magic Missiles provided some relief, but the creature’s relentless onslaught forced Deva to call for backup. Hearing cries of "treasure," Mad Matt abandoned his resting post and sprinted down the stairs, only to be met with the grotesque sight of the slime engulfing Deva's armour. Invoking Nalzagoth's power, Matt cast Create or Destroy Water, obliterating a significant portion of the slime. With the creature weakened, Deva delivered a final blow, vaporising the remaining mass with her Flame Blade.
Though victorious, the two adventurers were quite shaken. Peering through a nearby door, they saw an ominous hallway lined with traps and decided to retreat to the central room to regroup with Marina and Eldrian. However, Deva first decided to cash in a favour she was granted by Mad Matt long ago. Even though they had long forgotten what it was for, Matt complied and explored further. He pressed onward, discovering a hallway lined with arrow chutes. Mad Matt, emboldened by the lack of immediate danger, skipped through the first two sets of chutes unscathed. His overconfidence proved rather costly, as the third set of chutes unleashed a barrage of arrows, impaling his hands and leaving him screaming in pain. Chastened, he ducked under the remaining chutes, discovering a large hallway adorned with a mural of a two-headed snake and four doors leading to further mysteries.
Regrouping with the Crew
Mad Matt decided it was time to regroup with the rest of the crew, and soon Tiyna, Deva, Eldrian and Marina stood with him in the hallway. Behind the first door, the group encountered roots imbued with unnatural life. These writhing tendrils ensnared Marina and Deva, forcing the party into a rather desperate struggle. Marina managed to free herself and hack away at a pulsating tree node embedded in the wall. Destroying the node rendered the roots lifeless, clearing the path forward.
The next door revealed a familiar sight: a glowing red circle on the ought-to-be-safe floor, radiating magical energy. Mad Matt speculated that the circle was the work of a warlock attempting to summon something sinister. Before the group could formulate a proper plan, Deva, clearly impatient with all the theorising, stepped into the circle, triggering the appearance of two flaming birds.
The Battle Against the Flaming Birds
The fiery creatures wasted no time unleashing their wrath, scorching the party with bursts of flame - which was far too hot for my liking. Tiyana, learning from her earlier mistake with the slime, refrained from using fire-based magic, opting instead for Magic Missiles. Marina charged forward with her greataxe, while Eldrian swung his mace with fervour but struggled to land a solid blow.
Mad Matt’s icy tentacles turned the tide of the battle, exploiting the birds’ vulnerability to cold. The first bird was drenched by a rain cloud conjured by Matt, allowing Marina to finish it off with a decisive strike. The second bird, cornered and desperate, lashed out, injuring Tiyana and Mad Matt. Eldrian rushed to heal the wounded leader, while Deva unveiled her trump card: the Potion of the Small Puddle. Once mocked for her faith in the potion, Deva’s gamble paid off spectacularly as the liquid extinguished the flames of the remaining bird, reducing it to lifeless bones.
A Glimpse of Greater Challenges
With the fiery threat neutralized, the group turned their attention to the glowing circle. Could it serve as the key to freeing Auralis? The spirit dismissed the idea, explaining that the circle’s power was insufficient. She directed the party to the ziggurat’s fifth floor, where a suitable location might be found.
Exhausted and battered, the adventurers decided to rest within the circle’s protective glow - it was high time for a tea break, really. As they prepared to delve deeper, the weight of their discoveries and the challenges ahead loomed large. The ziggurat’s secrets were proving as perilous as they were enticing, and the party’s journey was far from over.
