Maritime Misadventures: A Rather Unpleasant Encounter with Goblins Following a Somewhat Frantic Departure from Port Elgin!
18 June 2024

However, fate had other, much more inconvenient plans.
A Hidden Stowaway and a New Ally
While poking about their new vessel, the crew found signs of previous occupants on the lower deck: hammocks recently used by Justíne and Justìne, alongside a book titled "How to Be the Best Guard" (which, frankly, seemed a bit much). In the cargo hold, amidst mostly empty crates, Wilma detected one shaking slightly. Opening it, she revealed Turquesa, a pointy-hatted wood elf wizard on a quest for gemstones, who had hidden aboard during the Port Elgin kerfuffle. Recognising her value, and after ensuring there was enough room for everyone to have a spot of tea, the crew welcomed Turquesa into their ranks.
Goblin Treachery at Sea
Their journey was soon interrupted by a suspicious sea outpost. Goblin chief Backwater demanded half their cargo under threat of sinking the ship - quite rude, if you ask me. Forced to comply, the crew devised a rather cunning plan. Sonia and Wilma stashed all the plates and cutlery from the ship in boxes and carried them onto the outpost. Disguised as a goblin, Cecile hid within the crates and infiltrated the outpost from within. Her disguise fooled everyone, as she looked quite similar to Knifey McFingers, a goblin of the troupe who happened to oversleep that day... She joined a cannon crew plotting a mutiny against Backwater, setting the stage for a bit of a betrayal. Backwater was not particularly impressed by the cutlery and gave the order to fire when Sonia and Wilma tricked two goblins into coming to their ship.
Deception and Betrayal
Cannon fire erupted in the ensuing battle as chaos engulfed the ship and outpost, which was all terribly unorganised. Wilma, in giant badger form (not a very dignified way to behave, admittedly), grappled with Backwater while Sonia targeted the cannon crews with her Greatbow. Cecile and her new goblin ally Bendigo turned cannons against Backlar, gravely injuring him. Wilma bit off Backwater's head - rather messy, really - and Cecile used her magical lute to put the remaining goblins to sleep, which was much more civil. She used her uncanny charm to convince Bendigo to abandon his life of crime and join her in sailing the entire triangle – but promptly made him a bit too tipsy when they were toasting wine to their victory. The unsteady Bendigo stumbled back to his tent, seemingly having forgotten about their plan together.
Loot and Departure
After the victory, the crew assessed their spoils: barrels of ale, wine, and pork, and a mystical ocean-blue longsword. They disposed of the bodies and seized a cannon and plank from the outpost before quickly hoisting the anchor. With a new ally, valuable loot, and a renewed sense of purpose, our heroes continue their journey towards Goldenbank. What challenges await them in the bustling city? Stay tuned for the next entry in their grand tale, exclusively here in the Fireball Gazette!
Love Amidst the Chaos: The Tale of Bendigo and Knifey
In the aftermath of battle, two unlikely hearts find their true course – by Senior Reporter and Avid Romance Geek Vivian Silverquill ♡
As a rather grey dawn broke over the goblin outpost, Bendigo awoke with a throbbing head and a heart full of longing. Memories of the previous day’s mutiny were hazy, much like a poorly brewed tea, but one image remained vivid: Knifey McFingers. Bendigo had always harboured a secret affection for her, admiring her fiery spirit and luscious locks. The day before, in the middle of the absolute chaos of the battle, Knifey had spoken to him about leaving their life of crime and sailing the world together. Now, as he rose from his tent, he found the outpost almost deserted. Sparkmack and Meek the Second were the only other survivors, their faces etched with the bitterness of defeat.
Stepping outside, Bendigo’s heart skipped a beat when he saw Knifey. She was sitting by the remnants of their last campfire, her hair shimmering in the morning light. For a moment, he doubted his memory, but her familiar mischievous grin reassured him. He approached her, his heart pounding with quite an unseemly rhythm.
"Knifey," he said softly, "I... I had the most incredible dream last night. We talked about leaving this life behind, sailing away together. I still want that. I want us to be free."
Knifey looked up at him, her eyes sparkling with a mix of surprise and joy. She had always been fond of Bendigo, admiring his loyalty and his knack for finding humour in the direst situations. She shared his penchant for drinking and oversleeping, traits that had often led to rather awkward situations but had also forged a bond between them.
"Bendigo," she whispered, "I’ve always felt the same way. Let’s do it. Let’s leave this place and start anew."
They spent the day planning their escape, sharing stolen glances and whispered dreams, trying not to make too much of a scene. As night fell, they prepared the outpost’s lifeboat, packing it with supplies and their few treasured belongings. With Sparkmack and Meek the Second fast asleep, they silently pushed the boat into the water.
As they sailed into the moonlit sea, Bendigo couldn’t help but admire Knifey’s determination and beauty. Her hair flowed like a dark river, and her eyes shone with excitement. He reached for her hand, feeling a warmth that dispelled the chill of the night.
"To us," he said, raising a flask of wine they had taken for the journey.
"To us," she echoed, clinking her flask against his. They drank deeply, the wine fueling their courage and solidifying their resolve.
Together, they sailed into the unknown, hearts full of hope and the promise of new adventures. Bendigo knew that with Knifey by his side, the future held endless possibilities. They had escaped the shadows of their past and were now free to write their own story, one filled with love, laughter, and the endless, somewhat damp horizon of the open sea…
