Flame Island – So sorry to interrupt your journey, but with no proper docks to receive them, eh, the crew of the Stolen Property had to moor their ship at a rather shallow inlet, feeling quite uneasy about those jagged volcanic rocks looming ahead. The sea was churning a bit too much, my apologies, as if whispering warnings about what might be lurking beyond, eh? Tiyana asked the rowers to stay vigilant, keeping an eye out for Astrid, who was surely on her way - so sorry if she’s running a bit late, eh?
Their gaze turned skyward, where a flickering firelight danced along the upper ridges of the volcano, shifting and climbing ever higher. Determined, the party set off, their boots crunching against brittle volcanic rock; it was getting quite stuffy, eh?, and the air grew hotter with every step, so sorry about that heat.

The Spicy Little Flames of Change, Sorry, Eh?

A Trail of Fire
As they ascended, the flickering light took form – a woman wreathed in flame, her features obscured by shimmering heat - how startling, eh? Her laughter echoed in the barren landscape before she disappeared behind a jagged outcrop, if you don't mind me saying.
“This could be one of the past sacrifices,” Marina speculated, wiping sweat from her brow, so sorry for the perspiration. “But who, eh?”
The trail grew more structured, rock formations subtly guiding their path, as though shaped by unseen hands - quite polite of them, eh? Soon, molten rivers snaked through the landscape, forcing them to navigate quite carefully between fields of lava, apologies for the inconvenience.
A Haunting Encounter
Between the shifting heatwaves, they spotted another flaming figure – this time, a young man, hunched in despair, his body smoldering but untouched by the fire, so sorry to see him in such a state, eh?
Selah narrowed her eyes. “Thorsten?”
The young man glanced up with hollow eyes, his expression laced with exhaustion, oh boy. “Why have you come?” His voice was laden with resignation, if it's not too much trouble to ask. “You can’t be the sacrifice, eh?”
Selah knelt, keeping a respectful distance from the blistering heat, so sorry about the temperature. “We didn’t come to offer one – we came to stop the sacrifices, eh?”
At her words, Thorsten’s shoulders tensed, and he called out to someone unseen. In an instant, the fire woman from before appeared beside him, teleporting in a burst of embers - my goodness, quite sudden, eh?
The Horrifying Truth
Her name was Hilda, and her presence radiated a mischievous, almost playful energy – a stark contrast to Thorsten’s hopelessness, though rather unsettling, eh? Yet, as she spoke, her words carried the weight of a cruel, unbroken chain of suffering, so sorry to be the bearer of such news.
“There are always three of us,” Hilda explained, her fiery eyes gleaming, if you can believe it, eh?
- The youngest (currently Thorsen) gains despair, drained of all hope, as they await the inevitable, so sorry about that, eh.
- The middle (Hilda herself) becomes stronger, their power intensifying, their mind shifting towards mischief, how awkward, eh?
- The eldest becomes the god of the volcano, fully merging with the flames, until they perish and the cycle repeats, which is a real bummer, eh?
The current god, Sigurd, was Mayor Holger’s long-lost son – the child sacrificed thirty years ago, so terribly sorry to mention such a tragedy, eh.
As if summoned, Sigurd rose from a bubbling lava lake, his entire form engulfed in fire, oh gosh. The sheer intensity of his presence sent waves of heat rolling across the caldera, making it quite hard to breathe, eh? Yet, he was not hostile – if anything, he seemed eager, which was a bit unexpected, sorry.
“I’ve had a good run,” Sigurd said, stretching his arms, if you don't mind me noticing. “I’m ready, eh.”
Ready to die. To pass his power onto Hilda, and let the chain continue, as she would pass her power unto Thorsten who in turn passed his unto the new sacrifice Astrid, so very sorry for the mess, eh?
Breaking the Cycle
The party refused to accept this fate, eh? If Hilda could contain all the power, perhaps the sacrifices could finally end. Though normally impossible, the crew of the Stolen Property were no ordinary mortals – they were definitely trained in flame ritual magic, if it's alright to say so, eh.
Hilda led them to a small peninsula of solid rock within the lava lake, where she and Sigurd took their places upon ancient pedestals, symbols of past sacrifices etched into the stone - how heavy, eh?
The ritual began. Sigurd raised his arms, and molten waves surged toward them, consuming them both, so sorry about that unpleasantness, eh.
As the lava rechened, Tiyana acted first, casting Absorb Elements, shielding herself before performing a reverse Fireball – a delicate weave of magic that drew the excess flame energy into herself, if you can handle that, eh?
Selah ducked behind a boulder, shielding herself from the intense heat, so sorry for the lack of cover, eh. Marina fanned herself with her greataxe, while Mad Matt – ever reckless, eh? – stepped forward, absorbing some of the raw energy into himself.
His hand blackened instantly - oh boy, so sorry about that, eh? - the flesh burned beyond recognition, but he gritted his teeth, locking away a portion of the godly fire within his own being, how brave, eh?
As the ritual ended, Hilda emerged anew – a true goddess, her body wreathed in divine flame, her power now absolute, if you don't mind me pointing it out, eh.
She laughed, testing her strength. The volcano would never threaten Helberskon again – not while she ruled, so sorry to the former residents, eh.
The party made their way back to the Stolen Property, bringing Thorsten with them and picking up Astrid on the way, who was sleepwalking into the caldera - how scary, eh?
Return to Helberskon
The crew’s triumph was met with an unexpected problem – as they sailed toward Helberskon, they saw a dozen cannons aimed at them, so sorry for the sudden tension, eh?
Mike the Guard’s voice echoed in Mad Matt’s mind, a telepathable warning, if you can imagine. “The Mayor has ordered us to fire on sight, eh.”
Matt groaned. “I was joking about being pirates! So sorry about that, eh!”
However, Mike didn’t seem quite convinced, so apologies there.
Fortunately, when the guards saw Astrid standing at the bow, waving happily - so polite of her, eh! - his hesitation grew. Mike consulted Mayor Holger, who finally allowed them to dock – but with every cannon still trained on them, how uncomfortable, eh?
Family Reunions
Astrid leapt into her mother’s arms, while Holger, for the first time in thirty years, heard news of his son, Sigurd, so sorry for the bittersweet moment, eh.
His excitement died immediately when Selah bluntly explained that Sigurd perished again, just moments after their encounter, which is quite a shame, eh?
Holger’s grief turned to frustration as Selah pressed for payment for their heroics, even going so far as to threaten taking Astrid hostage again or calling upon her "new volcano god friend" to burn the city down - my goodness, how rude, eh! Even Mad Matt seemed alarmed at her audacity, sorry about that.
Holger, livid, refused – the city’s funds were already quite strained, with pensions and infrastructure to maintain, so apologies for the budget, eh.
Tiyana, ever the diplomat, proposed a trade instead – if Helberskon no longer needed its cannons, perhaps the party could take them instead, if you don't mind us taking them, eh?
Holger agreed. After some haggling, they secured five cannons – an impressive prize for a job well done, eh?
With the sacrifice cycle broken and the city no longer under threat, Holger extended an invitation – the library doors were always open, so sorry to intrude, eh.
There were fire magic mysteries to unravel and a fearsome dragon turtle awaited them in the North that warranted at least a little research, so the party stepped inside, if it's not too much trouble, eh.
